Martin Garrix is one of the most famous DJ and house producer worldwide. He had won the first place of DJ Mag Top 100 DJ from 2016 to 2018. When he came as one of the headliners at DWP 2019, Martin Garrix briefly chatted with the Kumparan team. With a very friendly smile, the 23-year-old DJ was willing to tell us a lot about the beginning of his career.
Martin Garrix stated that he had known electronic dance music (EDM) since he was 8 years old. Apparently, there is a famous DJ from the Netherlands who gave him a lot of inspiration. “Tiesto was the first DJ to inspire me. I still remember well, when I was 8 years old I watched Tiesto’s stage at the Olympics. At that time, I felt he looked so cool when standing alone on the stage with a DJ set”, Garrix told Kumparan at JIExpo, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.
When Martin Garrix was 11 years old, his parents gave him a set of turntables as birthday present. When he started to learn more, Garrix’s heart began to firmed on pursuing his dream to become a professional DJ and music producer.
”Because in my opinion, music is a universal language. For example, you are Indonesian and I am Dutch. Without English, we will have difficulty in communicating,” he said. “But if I can make good music, you will still have fun and understand what I’m trying to convey, right?” he continued.
Seeing Garrix’s face shining so brightly when he told us about his love for music, Kumparan team was curious about what he would do if he didn’t become a DJ and music producer. The answer from the man whose real name is Martijn Gerard Garritsen was quite astonishing. “I don’t know, maybe I will continue to work in the music world. Really, I’ve fallen in love with music, and I don’t think I can live without it. So if I don’t become a DJ, I might become a pianist or a band member,” he added, laughing.
Martin Garrix was the closing headliner of the first day of DWP 2019. At that time, he performed a lot of hits that he created, such as ‘Scared To Be Lonely’, ‘In The Name of Love’, and ‘Animals’.
